Reflecting Light into the Inner Night

Reflecting Light into the Inner Night

Tonight was a full moon.

After days of silence and meditation, we ended the night with a full moon meditation.

Guruji said, we have known the moon for yugas. Let us honor the moon, before we soak in the moonlight. The meditation was profound. Tears rolled as I soaked in the moonlight, as I remembered Guruji’s compassion. After the meditation, I wondered about the role of the moon in our lives.

We often talk about the sun as the source of life on this planet. And that is true. The sun gives energy. It makes plants grow. It keeps the planet alive by driving activity (such as photosynthesis and circadian rhythms).  It stimulates the body and mind to act.

But the moon plays a different role.
The moon helps us come back into sync with ourselves. It does not add energy. It does not excite the body or mind. It helps things slow down and align naturally.

Just like when loud music stops and the room feels calm again.

In yogic wisdom, the moon is connected to the mind.

When the moon is full, the mind becomes more luminous. Thoughts slow down. Emotions rise to the surface. If the mind is restless, this can feel overwhelming. But when the mind is quiet, the same energy feels expansive and peaceful.
That is why silence and full moon nights feel so powerful together.

People meditate on a full moon because the mind is naturally more open and sensitive. The lunar energy is at its peak, making it easier to observe thoughts without getting caught in them. Meditation feels less effortful. When the mind settles, awareness is clearly felt.

The moon also governs water, and we are mostly water. Just as it moves the tides of the ocean, it subtly moves our inner tides. Our emotions, memories, and intuition respond to it. What rises depends on the state of our awareness.

The sun stimulates the nervous system.
The moon nourishes it. In the Vedic tradition, this nourishing lunar energy is called ‘Soma’. Soma is cooling, soothing, and replenishing. It cools the inner fire so awareness can rest without effort.

We measure time by the moon. Months, cycles, festivals, fasting. The moon reminds us that life is cyclical. Things grow, fade, rest, and return again. Nothing is broken when something ends. It is simply moving toward another fullness.

The sun gives energy to the world.
The moon reflects light into the inner night.

That is why poetry, devotion, and meditation have always belonged to the moon. The moon meets us where we are. In vulnerability. In quiet. In stillness.

The sun tells life when to move. The moon reminds us to listen within.

Sometimes, all we need is a little moonlight to remember our own glow.

The sun lights up the world outside. The moon lights up the world inside. We need both to feel complete. Let us honor both.
